So is what he said next. In the same July 22 call, Musk described Optimus as “the hardest product to scale manufacturing that we’ve ever made at Tesla, because everything on the robot is new.” No shared supply chain. No shared tooling. Every actuator, every joint, built from a standing start.
Here’s what that actually looks like on the ground. Fremont’s Model S and Model X production lines are gone, shut down in early May and converted to Optimus assembly. At full build-out, the designed capacity there is up to 1 million units a year. A second, larger plant is under construction at Giga Texas, eventually targeting 10 million units a year, though it won’t come online until 2027.
That’s the scale of the ambition. Here’s the scale of the reality, Tesla’s actual production guidance for 2026 is 50,000 to 100,000 units. As of the July 22 call, the company has not publicly verified shipping a single production unit.

The second is dismissing the entire category as science fiction because the hype has clearly outrun the hardware.
