Zeroth world economy map graphic: Dario Amodei's Davos description of a decoupled AI economy concentrated in Silicon Valley.

The zeroth world economy, mapped: Dario Amodei’s own nightmare scenario for how AI reshapes the map of opportunity.

At Davos this year, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, was asked what worries him most about where the AI economy is heading. He didn’t answer with a statistic about job losses. He drew a map. What he described has since become known as the zeroth world economy, his own nightmare scenario for how this all plays out.

The Nightmare Amodei Actually Described

His words: “there’s like this emerging zeroth world country of like 10 million people, that’s like 7 million people in the Bay, in Silicon Valley, and 3 million people scattered throughout… maybe the 10% GDP growth looks like 50% GDP growth in that part.” Asked to characterize it, he didn’t hesitate. His own word was “dystopian.”

This isn’t a prediction about a literal new country. It’s a description of an economy quietly decoupling from the one everyone else lives inside, growing at a different rate, on a different track, for a different, much smaller population.

Why the Zeroth World Economy Isn’t About Geography

Everyone else stays outside the border. Not because of where they live, because of what they became irreplaceable at. The zeroth world Amodei describes isn’t defined by a passport or a zip code. It’s defined by whether your work is the kind an accelerating AI economy still needs a human for, or the kind it has already learned to route around.

That’s what makes the map so unsettling. You don’t need to move to Silicon Valley to end up inside the border, and you don’t need to live there to end up outside it. What determines which side you’re on is happening inside individual careers and organizations right now, not on a map anyone can see.

You Don’t Get Fired by AI. You Get Archived.

That’s the line worth sitting with. Being fired is a single event, visible, with a date attached. Being archived is quieter. Your role stays technically intact while the parts of it that generated real value get absorbed elsewhere, and what’s left slowly stops mattering to the organization around you. Nobody announces it. It just happens, the same way a country can quietly decouple from an economy without a single border ever being redrawn.

This is the same split at the center of the Kryptonite Defense. DISTINCTION isn’t about being different for its own sake. It’s about being the person or organization that can’t simply be archived, because what you do isn’t interchangeable with what a faster, cheaper alternative can now do instead.

What the Zeroth World Economy Means for You

Amodei isn’t describing an inevitability. He’s describing a nightmare scenario, his word, not a forecast he’s rooting for. What determines whether it plays out at the scale he fears is how many individuals and organizations actively build the kind of distinction that keeps them inside the border, instead of assuming their current position will hold on its own.

Those prepared need not fear the forces at work. The zeroth world economy isn’t a place. It’s a test of whether what you do is genuinely hard to replace, and that test is already running, whether or not anyone draws the map.

The 5 Ingredient Kryptonite Defense to Win in the Zeroth World

Staying inside the border comes down to five ingredients working together, the same five that make up the Kryptonite Defense.

  • IDEAS: New ideas are what keep a person or organization from becoming interchangeable. The ones staying ahead in the Zeroth World are generating original thinking faster than AI can replicate what already exists. Standing still on old ideas is how you end up on the wrong side of the border.
  • SPEED: Speed means closing the gap between having an idea and putting it into action. Organizations that spend months debating what AI already lets a competitor do this week are the ones getting quietly archived. In the Zeroth World, speed decides who leads a shift and who reacts to one after it already happened.
  • TALENT: The people who do best in the Zeroth World are doing work that still needs a human, judgment calls, real relationships, decisions with consequences nobody wants to hand off to a machine. Building that kind of talent takes real investment, and it matters more now than technical skill alone, because technical skill is exactly what AI absorbs fastest. Organizations that invest here keep their best people inside the border. The ones that do not watch them get restless, or get replaced.
  • DISTINCTION: This is the ingredient the whole Zeroth World idea is built around. Distinction means doing something a faster, cheaper alternative cannot simply copy, whether that is a company product, a leader approach, or a personal reputation. Every other ingredient on this list supports distinction. Without it, none of the rest keep you inside the border for long.
  • LEADERSHIP AT ALL LEVELS: The Zeroth World does not get decided only in the boardroom. It gets decided by whether people at every level of an organization can make good decisions without waiting for permission first. Companies that concentrate leadership at the top move too slowly to keep up with the pace Amodei described. The ones that build leadership into every level move at the speed the moment actually demands.

See where you or your organization actually stand on these five ingredients. The Kryptonite Scorecard walks you through it in about 12 minutes
